BINGHAM — It doesn’t happen only in the movies: Robbers really can cut a hole through the wall of one business to steal from another.
Police on Thursday arrested Joshua Coldwell, 21, of Skowhegan, and charged him with burglary and theft for allegedly doing just that at John's Smoke Shop on Main Street two weeks ago.
When an employee arrived to work at the smoke shop on June 19, she found that a big hole had been cut through the wall of an adjoining building, according to a store employee and Det. Lt. Carl E. Gottardi II of the Somerset County Sheriff's Office.
Once inside, the burglar stole 375 packages of cigarettes, 20 lighters, 10 pipes, five knives and the store's cash register. Gottardi estimated the loss at $2,650.
And then the burglar threw most of it away.
"The guy threw everything in the Kennebec River except the cash," Gottardi said. Gottardi said this is not unusual.
"I've had many people do that before," he said. "In Parlin Pond, they stole guns and four-wheelers and then threw them off the bridge in Lewiston, nervous they were going to get caught.
