During the past five weeks, the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram ran the comic strip "Pickles" by Brian Crane as a temporary replacement for Wiley Miller's "Non Sequitur" while Miller took a vacation.
Today, "Non Sequitur" returns with all-new strips. But "Pickles" isn't going anywhere.
Due to an overwhelmingly positive reception to Crane's strip about a retired couple, we are adding it to the comics lineup as a replacement for Lynn Johnston's "For Better or For Worse."
Johnston announced on Aug. 13 that she would no longer be producing new strips of "For Better or For Worse" as of Sept. 1.
Instead, she is offering newspapers reruns of old strips from the comic's beginning in the late 1970s with a few embellishments here and there.
We thought it was better to replace Johnston's strip with a proven favorite rather than give readers more reruns.
So we are giving them "Pickles" seven days a week.
Readers first gave their thumbs-up to "Pickles" when we ran a comics poll during the spring. "Get Fuzzy" by Darby Conley barely edged out Crane's strip with a vote tally of 1,963 to 1,783, and was added to our comics lineup in July.
