ROCKLAND, Maine - A Department of Motor Vehicles examiner was injured Thursday when the teenage girl taking her driving test pulled into the path of an oncoming car.

Linda Norton, 51, from the Rockland office of the Department of Motor Vehicles, complained of neck pain after the accident and was taken by Rockland Ambulance to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport for treatment.

Sgt. Jeff McLaughlin said Norton was administering a road test to Desirea York, 18, of Port Clyde when the accident occurred. York was headed toward downtown on Limerock Street in a 2003 Toyota when she took a left on Broadway directly into the path of a 2002 Mercedes Benz coming up Limerock from the opposite direction. The Mercedes was driven by Sarah Peter, 59, of New York, N.Y.

"The Mercedes T-boned into the passenger side of the Toyota," McLaughlin.

McLaughlin said York was extremely distraught after the accident and someone at the scene drove to the motor vehicle office to get her father who was there waiting for his daughter to return with the family car. All three involved in the accident were wearing seat belts.
