The DiMillo's dynasty in Portland is about to expand, with the anticipated opening of G & R DiMillo's Bayside in early March.
The restaurant and sports bar at 118 Preble St. is a separate venture by Gene and Renee DiMillo in a downtown neighborhood that's experiencing a variety of commercial and residential redevelopment.
The City Council gave DiMillo's Bayside a liquor license Monday night. The license allows indoor entertainment and dancing and outdoor dining at a location most recently occupied by Bleachers sports bar.
Gene DiMillo is the oldest son of Arlene and the late Anthonio DiMillo, founders of DiMillo's Floating Restaurant, a fixture on the Portland waterfront that dates back to 1954. Brothers Steve, Danny and John and a sister, Stephanie, operate the family restaurant, while another brother, Chris, runs the adjacent marina and yacht-sales operation.
Gene DiMillo, 50, left the family business on Commercial Street two years ago, ending 34 years of seven-day work weeks in the hope of spending more time with his family. He was sure he'd never go back.
"I'd been working at the restaurant since I was 11," DiMillo said. "I did everything, from washing pots and pans to cooking. The older we got, the more responsibility we got. It got to the point where I never had a weekend off."
DiMillo said he enjoyed spending more time with his wife and his boys, Geno, 19, Nick, 15, and Luke, 11. But after selling real estate, issuing mortgages and delivering packages, he decided to give the restaurant business another go.
