The Maine Games has teamed up with weplay; a new social network for sports-minded people of all ages across the country. According to executive director, Jeff Scully, of Saco, this new network has the potential to change the way amateur sports in Maine and around America operate.

“With the popularity of social networking websites like MySpace and Facebook, it’s become quite obvious that as Americans, we are very interested in seeing what everyone else is doing,” said Scully. Weplay was created so you can see what everyone is playing. It’s a meeting place for active people who share a passion for sports. It’s a great way to hook up with teams and parents and athletes in an infinite number of scenarios.”

Scully sees this opportunity to connect directly with other athletes who share the same passion as a key to growing any sport within Maine. “This is a way for parents with kids on the same team to connect, share ideas, photos, videos, and even schedule meetings and events. But it’s also a way for athletes in Maine to connect with their counterparts from the next community, the next county or in every corner of America. A swimmer in Waterville, Maine could become friends with a swimmer in Portland, or they could become friends with a swimmer in San Diego. They share the same passion, but now they can share much more.

Weplay was developed by the same people who created such popular networking websites as Geocities, EHarmony, and Eteamz. Combined, they have the knowledge, experience, and understanding that it takes to do it right and create a product that does what its members want it to do.

Professional athletes as well as Olympic heroes have joined weplay to create their own personal profile pages to interact with athletes of all ages. Little Leaguers can find out first hand from Derek Jeter, or Ryan Howard, what it is like to go from the small diamond to playing in the major leagues. Basketball players can get tips from LeBron James and Tony Parker. Other athletes who have committed their time and their own money to weplay include; Peyton Manning, Brandi Chastain, Jennie Finch, Summer Sanders, and Shaun Alexander. Members at weplay can interact with these world-class athletes and become their friends.

Anybody can create a group to provide a single destination for your team or league to hang out and get updates, shout out and promote your favorite sport, create a family page to discuss, post a schedule, share media and connect with all your favorite groups and more. Groups can be utilized for all types of purposes.

Groups currently provide an event schedule, member list, news blog, activity feed, photo and video gallery, comments/guestbook, and a "Linked Groups" page for other groups your friends with or officially affiliated.

When scheduling an activity, you can add anything from a practice to carpool pick-up to photo day.

Events from all groups you belong to will filter down and can be sorted on your personal dashboard/profile schedule.

It may sound a little complicated, but in reality, Its not. Creating your profile on weplay is very simple and takes only a minute or two. Parents can control and monitor their kids’ pages, and every photo and video that is posted is first checked by weplay to make sure the content is appropriate for all ages. You can control the level of privacy you want or need, and you decide what information gets out to the public, or what stays within your own group.

Scully thinks that in a very short period of time people will be using weplay to set up tournaments, schedule practices, communicate between teammates and their families, and be sharing photos and videos. “The Maine Games has created their own group, and then groups for all of this year’s events.

“We may eventually begin using weplay for our primary internet source to get information out to our athletes, supporters, volunteers, sponsors, and the media — I think weplay has that kind of potential.”
