Update for 08-02 & 08-03-08
Limited afternoon sunshine helped to kick off scattered showers and storms across the western half of our viewing area. It's a welcome break in the rain for downeast, where some areas picked up over 2'' yesterday. Expect scattered showers and storms statewide to last through the night. Some areas off to the west could pick up over an inch of rain from small slow moving thunderstorms. Overnight lows will be on either side of 60°.
Tomorrow may be a new day, but we are still stuck in the same weather pattern. Low pressure will move through the Gulf of Maine, causing widespread showers and thunderstorms. The heaviest rain will likely be west of Bangor. Areas that see consistent, heavy rainfall could pick up over 2'' by Monday. Areas east of Bangor will not be completely spared, some of the heavier showers could easily bring over an inch of rain in some locations.
Due to the large amount of rain that could potentially fall and the already high water content in the soil, the National Weather Service has issued flood watches for much of the state. The following text is their issued advisory:
"* PORTIONS OF EAST CENTRAL MAINE...NORTH CENTRAL MAINE...NORTHERN MAINE AND WEST CENTRAL MAINE...INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING AREAS...IN EAST CENTRAL MAINE...CENTRAL PENOBSCOT...NORTHERN PENOBSCOT AND SOUTHERN PENOBSCOT. IN NORTH CENTRAL MAINE...CENTRAL PISCATAQUIS...NORTHERN PISCATAQUIS AND SOUTHERN PISCATAQUIS. IN NORTHERN MAINE...NORTHEAST AROOSTOOK...NORTHWEST AROOSTOOK AND SOUTHEAST AROOSTOOK. IN WEST CENTRAL MAINE...NORTHERN SOMERSET. * FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH LATE SUNDAY NIGHT* EXPECT RAINFALL UP TO TWO INCHES WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS POSSIBLE FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY.* HEAVY RAINFALL WILL RESULT IN SMALL STREAMS AND BROOKS TO RISE TO OR ABOVE BANKFULL. HOWEVER...NO FLOODING IN EXPECTED ON THE MAIN STEM RIVERS THROUGHOUT THE THREAT AREA. A FLOOD WATCH MEANS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR FLOODING BASED ON CURRENT FORECASTS."
Tonight: Mostly cloudy. Showers and thunderstorms. Low on either side of 60°.
Sunday: Showers and storms. Rain could be heavy at times. High in the low to mid 70's.
Monday: Mostly cloudy, chance of showers. High in the mid to upper 70's.
Tuesday: Partly cloudy. High around 80°.
Wednesday: Mostly cloudy. High in the low to mid 70's.
Thursday: Mostly cloudy. High in the low to mid 70's.
