Forecast 1-1-08

Post by Outspoken on Tue Jan 01, 2008 7:21 am

From the TV5 Forecast Center:

High pressure will provide us with some sunshine early today but clouds will quickly move back into the state as our next winter storm approaches. This storm will move into western New York State, redevelop near Cape Cod this afternoon then move through the Gulf of Maine tonight and early Wednesday. Precipitation with this storm will arrive later this afternoon then pick up in intensity as we go through the overnight. Precipitation type will be all snow for most locations however enough warm air may make it into immediate coastal locations for the snow to mix with sleet and rain for a time this evening before changing back to snow tonight. Snow will fall steadily Tuesday night into Wednesday morning with the heaviest snowfall occurring over areas south of Greenville and Millinocket. Snow will taper to snow showers early Wednesday morning with storm totals averaging between 8-14" for much of the state. Lighter amounts can be expected along the coast where some mixing may occur tonight as well as lighter amounts over far northern areas as they'll be further away from the actual storm.

A gusty northwest wind will usher some colder air into the region during the day Wednesday. The gusty winds will likely cause some blowing and drifting snow as well.

A combination of low pressure to our east and high pressure to our west on Thursday will set us up for a bitterly cold day as arctic is drawn southward from central and eastern Canada. Despite lots of sunshine Thursday, our high temperatures will only manage to get to the upper single numbers to mid-teens. Winds will turn to the southwest for Friday as high pressure makes it way to our south. With the help of the milder, southwest wind, temperatures will be a bit warmer Friday with highs topping off a couple degrees either side of 20°. Outside of a few snow showers, our forecast is expected to remain dry through the upcoming weekend with temperatures running mainly in the 30s.

Today: becoming cloudy with light snow developing later in the day. Afternoon high temperatures between 27°-35°. Light winds will become southeast 5-10 MPH.

Tonight: snow, heavy at times. Snow may mix with sleet and rain along the immediate coast this evening. Lows between 16°-24°. Northeast wind 10-15 MPH.

Wednesday: any lingering light snow early will taper to snow showers, then mostly cloudy with some breaks possible later in the afternoon. Windy and colder. Highs between 17°-26°. North wind 10-20 MPH with higher gusts becoming northwest.

Thursday: mostly sunny, breezy and bitterly cold. Highs in the upper single numbers to mid-teens.

Friday: partly cloudy. A few morning snow showers possible up north. Highs in the upper teens to low 20s.

Saturday: partly cloudy and more seasonable. Highs in the upper 20s to low 30s.
