FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON...
THE FLOOD WATCH IS NOW IN EFFECT FOR:
* PORTIONS OF EAST CENTRAL MAINE, NORTH CENTRAL MAINE, NORTHERN MAINE AND WEST CENTRAL MAINE INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES: AROOSTOOK, NORTHERN PENOBSCOT, NORTHERN PISCATAQUIS, NORTHERN SOMERSET.
* THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON
* ADDITIONAL RAINFALL IS EXPECTED ACROSS THE WATCH AREA TODAY. THE RAIN MAY BE HEAVY AT TIMES. THE ADDITIONAL RAINFALL COMBINED WITH THE HEAVY RAIN THAT FELL ACROSS THE AREA DURING THE WEEKEND MAY RESULT IN SOME SMALL STREAM AND URBAN FLOODING.
* HEAVY RAINFALL WILL RESULT IN RISES TO NEAR OR ABOVE BANKFULL ON SMALL STREAMS AND BROOKS. IN ADDITION...LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL MAY CAUSE PONDING OF WATER ON AREA ROADWAYS. NO FLOODING IS EXPECTED ON THE MAIN STEM RIVERS THROUGHOUT THE WATCH AREA. HOWEVER...SOME OF THE MAINSTEM RIVERS HAVE SHOWN SIGNIFICANT RISES OVER THE PAST 24 HOURS DUE TO THE HEAVY RAINFALL INCLUDING THE ALLAGASH RIVER...THE SAINT JOHN RIVER AT FORT KENT...THE BIG BLACK AND LITTLE BLACK RIVERS AND THE AROOSTOOK RIVER AT MASARDIS AND WASHBURN. ADDITIONAL RISES ARE POSSIBLE TODAY.
The storm system responsible for Sunday's rainfall will continue to slowly pull away from the region today. Upper level energy associated with the storm, is centered right over the state this morning, and will be moving eastward as well. Expect more showers and possibly a few thunderstorms today with the steadiest activity occurring over the northern half of the state. With plenty of moisture still in the area, rainfall could be heavy at times today especially in any thunderstorms. The upper level energy will finally clear the state tonight, allowing showers to gradually wind down from west to east across Maine tonight.
A ridge of high pressure will build into New England on Tuesday bringing us some breaks of sunshine. Highs on Tuesday will top off in the upper 60s to mid- 70s. Unfortunately the sunshine won't last long, another storm system will head our way for Wednesday. Expect a dry start to Wednesday with a little morning sun possible then clouds will take over and showers and thunderstorms will arrive from late morning through the afternoon. This next storm will redevelop to the south and east of Massachusetts Wednesday then move out to sea Wednesday night. Another batch of upper level energy will then move into the region for Thursday and Friday keeping us under the gun for scattered showers and thunderstorms through the end of the week.
Today: mostly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Some of the rain could be heavy at times. High temperatures between 66°-76°. Northwest wind 5-10 MPH.
Tonight: mostly cloudy with patchy fog. Scattered showers ending from west to east. Lows between 56°- 62°. North wind 5-10 MPH.
Tuesday: variably cloudy with highs between 68°-76°. North wind 5-10 MPH.
Wednesday: becoming cloudy. Scattered showers and thunderstorms developing from late morning on. Rain could be heavy at times. Highs between 66°-72°.
