forecast 08-01-08

A weakening frontal system sliding into western Maine this morning will provide us with more showers and thunderstorms today. Areas of fog developed during the overnight and will be an issue in spots for the morning commute. Today's high temperatures will remain in the low to mid-70s. Showers will wind down a bit tonight with areas of fog re-developing. Some of the fog will be dense in spots so use caution on the roads as you'll likely encounter reduced visibilities in many locations.

The weekend forecast will remain on the unsettled side as an upper level low pressure system moves into southern Quebec/northern New England. Expect more showers and thunderstorms scattered about the state Saturday with the most numerous activity occurring during the afternoon and evening hours. Energy spinning around the upper low will trigger the development of an area of low pressure over the mid- Atlantic. The new area of low pressure will track south of New England Saturday then just south of the Gulf of Maine during Sunday. This looks to bring us some steadier rainfall for later Saturday night into Sunday. The rain will move out late Sunday night or early Monday as the storm slides to our east. High pressure building into the region Tuesday will bring some sunshine back to our forecast and push temperatures up into the mid-70s.

Today: patchy dense fog this morning. Mostly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Humid. High temperatures between 70°-77°. East wind 5-10 MPH becoming southeast.

Tonight: mostly cloudy skies with a few showers. Areas of fog, some dense. Lows between 58°-63°. Southeast wind 5-10 MPH.

Saturday: mostly cloudy. Scattered showers, a few thunderstorms possible especially during the afternoon and evening. Highs between 68°-75°. Southeast wind 5-10 MPH.

Sunday: showers likely, a thunderstorm possible. Highs in the upper 60s to low 70s.

Monday: morning showers then mostly cloudy. Highs in the upper 60s to mid-70s.

Tuesday: partly sunny with highs in the 70s.
