Forecast 05-27-08
A strong cold front is forecast to move through the state today, providing us with some showers and thunderstorms especially from late morning on. There is a chance that some of the thunderstorms that develop could become strong to severe over downeast and coastal locations this afternoon. Any thunderstorms that develop will have some gusty winds and frequent lightning and some of the stronger storms may have some small hail. The front will clear the state later this evening, bringing the showers and thunderstorms to an end. With the front forecast to cross the state during the day, we'll have a wide range in temperatures with highs in the mid-60s up north to the upper 60s and mid-70s elsewhere. Cooler and drier air moving in behind the front will help clear things out tonight.
High pressure will build in for Wednesday setting us up with plenty of sunshine. With a cooler air mass in places and a northwest breeze, temperatures will be running a bit below normal Wednesday afternoon with high temperatures in the upper 50s to mid-60s. Another cold front will move through the state late Wednesday night into Thursday with another round of shower activity. The bulk of the shower activity will occur through early Thursday afternoon before some drier air arrives and allows skies to brighten Thursday afternoon.
Sunshine will return in full force for the end of the week Friday as high pressure noses back into the region. We'll have to enjoy that because it looks like another storm system will head our way for the weekend, bringing us clouds and showers on Saturday.
Today: variably cloudy. Scattered showers and thunderstorms possible. Some of the thunderstorms that develop may become strong to severe especially over downeast and coastal locations this afternoon. The main threat will be frequent lightning, gusty winds and small hail. Afternoon high temperatures will be between 64°-78°, coolest north. Southwest wind 10- 15 MPH with higher gusts becoming northwest late in the day.
Tonight: scattered shower or thunderstorm early then clearing and cool. Lows between 35°-43°. Northwest wind 8-15 MPH.
Wednesday: mostly sunny, breezy and cooler. High temperatures will range from 57°-65°. Northwest wind 10-18 MPH becoming west.
Thursday: mostly cloudy with scattered showers mainly during the morning and early afternoon. Skies will become partly sunny northwest to southeast across the state during the mid-late afternoon. High temperatures between 61°-71°.
Friday: mostly sunny with highs in the upper 50s to mid-60s.
Saturday: showers possible. Highs in the upper 50s to low 60s.
