Forecast 01-08-08
From the TV5 Forecast Center:
High pressure remains centered out over Atlantic and will continue to pump milder air into the region today and Wednesday. Colder, more seasonable air is forecast to return to the area late in the week and into the weekend.
A stationary front located just to our north will be the focus mechanism for clouds and showers today. A couple of weak disturbance rippling along that front will bring a few showers into northern Maine today. Otherwise as you travel southward towards the coast, conditions will be a bit drier and you'll have a better chance to see a few breaks of sunshine. Temperatures will remain well above the norms with highs into the 40s in most locales today, approaching the 50° mark in spots especially south of Bangor. We'll keep an eye on some records today too: Bangor 50° set in 1956, Houlton 43° set in 1956, Millinocket 48° set in 1908 and Caribou 43° set in 1956.
A storm currently over the middle of the U.S. will continue moving northeastward and is forecast to move through New England on Wednesday. Mild air wil still in place when the storm arrives so precipitation is expected to fall in the form of rain showers from late morning through the afternoon. The rain may mix with or end as some snow over northern areas late in the day as cooler air wraps around the backside of the storm. Westerly winds in the wake of the storm will usher drier and slightly cooler air into New England on Thursday. Despite the cooler air in place, temperatures will still run several degrees above normal Thursday afternoon.
Another storm moving through the Ohio Valley on Friday will bring a quick shot of snow, mix and rain into the state Friday morning then wind down during the afternoon as drier moves into the state. Colder, more seasonable weather is expected to return to our forecast for the upcoming weekend.
Today: mostly cloudy with a few breaks of sun. Scattered rain showers possible, mainly over northern locations. Mild with high temperatures between 40°-50°. Southwest wind 5-10 MPH.
Tonight: mostly cloudy. Scattered showers, mainly north. Areas of fog. Lows in the mid-30s to around 40°. Southwest wind 5-10 MPH.
Wednesday: showers developing from late morning on. Showers may mix with or change to snow before ending up north. Highs between 41°-50°, falling late in the day. Southwest wind 10-15 MPH increasing to 15-25 MPH during the afternoon with higher gusts.
Thursday: partly cloudy and a bit cooler. Highs in the upper 30s to low 40s.
Friday: mostly cloudy. Snow/mix north, morning mix to rain elsewhere. Highs in the 30s.
Saturday: variably cloudy. Scattered snow showers possible up north. Colder with highs in the upper 20s to mid-30s.
