Forecast 01-02-08
From the TV5 Forecast Center:
Areas of snow early this morning will taper to snow showers as the storm continues to slide away from New England this morning. Any additional accumulations this morning will be light and mainly confined to eastern Maine. With a very strong area of high pressure across the central U.S. and a strong area of low pressure moving away from New England , we’ll have a tight pressure gradient over the state resulting in a gusty northwest wind today. The northwest wind will average 10-20 MPH today with gusts to near 30 MPH at times. Also, the northwest wind will usher colder, drier air into the state today. As the colder air arrives, temperatures will slowly fall to near 10° up north and the mid to upper teens later in the day. Skies will clear out this evening and with the cold airmass in place, low temperatures tonight will bottom out around the 0° mark in many locations.
High pressure will dominate our forecast Thursday, giving us lots of sunshine. Despite the sunshine though, temperatures will only reach the upper single numbers to mid-teens for highs. Northwest winds will remain breezy Thursday making temperatures feel more like its between 0° to –10° at times.
Our weather will remain nice and quiet for Friday right through the weekend. An upper level disturbance passing to our north on Friday morning will provide us with a few clouds to start the day. High pressure will build back into the region Saturday giving us a sunny start to the weekend. Southwest winds this weekend will bring milder air back into New England with temperatures in the upper 20s to low 30s Saturday and in the 30s to near 40° on Sunday. An upper level disturbance passing through the region Sunday will give us clouds a few snow showers early Sunday followed by sunshine for the afternoon.
Today: snow tapering to snow showers this morning then skies will become partly cloudy this afternoon from west to east across the state. High temperatures will range from 16°-26° this morning then slowly fall this afternoon. Northwest wind 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.
Tonight: clear to partly cloudy. Very cold with lows between –4° to +4°. Northwest wind 10-15 MPH with higher gusts. Wind chills will feel more like –10° to –25°.
Thursday: mostly sunny, breezy and bitterly cold. Highs in the upper single numbers to mid-teens. Northwest wind 10-15 MPH. Wind chills will feel more like 0 to –10°.
Friday: a few early clouds then partly cloudy. Highs in the upper teens to mid-20s.
Saturday: partly to mostly sunny. Not as cold with highs in the upper 20s to mid-30s.
