HOULTON, Maine — Children in many parts of the state got another day off from school — and in some places as much as 22½ more inches of snow to play in — after another snowstorm swept through the state on New Year’s Day.

The storm came on the heels of two others — one on Dec. 24 and 25 and the other on Dec. 27 and 28 — that have made for slick travel and contributed to numerous accidents.

The latest storm hit southern Aroostook County the hardest. Amity received 22½ inches of snow, while Houlton received 18 inches, according to preliminary statistics from the National Weather Service office in Caribou. Oakfield received 13 inches of snow. Snowfall in Monticello was around 8½ inches, while Presque Isle and Caribou each received 5½ inches.

The St. John Valley was not as hard-hit — 3½ inches of snow fell on Madawaska, Van Buren received 2½ inches, and Lille received just 1½ inches.

Snowfall tallies ranged from 5 inches in Portland, where rain mixed with snow, to more than a foot in some inland areas.
