Campsites and some popular trails in the southern portion of Baxter State Park will remain closed later than usual as crews work to clean up from the heavy winter snows and recent rains.
A Baxter official said campgrounds at Trout Brook and South Branch Pond in the northern end of the park will open today as scheduled. The remainder of the campgrounds along Park Tote Road will not open until May 19, and popular Roaring Brook campground is expected to be closed until May 23. Park officials typically aim to open those sites on May 15.
In addition, all trails to the top of Mount Katahdin are closed.
Park director Jensen Bissell said Wednesday that while none of the damage is major, the gravel Park Tote Road is not passable in some areas near Roaring Brook because of washouts. Other parts of the road still contain frost or are too soft to drive on without causing damage, Bissell said.
The Park Tote Road is open in Baxter’s southern end from Togue Pond Gate to the foot of Abol Hill and on the northern end from Matagamon Gate to the South Branch Pond campground.
"I think this is one of those years when things will unfold in the next week or two," Bissell said.
Anyone who made reservations at one of the closed campgrounds will be offered an alternative site, if available, or a reservation for another date, he said.
Those planning to reach the summit of Mount Katahdin will have to wait a bit longer as well.
The park staff is just beginning to scope out trail conditions from the Baxter Peak trailheads at Abol and Katahdin Stream campgrounds. Bissell said that while the Abol Slide is snow-free, trails through what is known as the Tabletop are still snow-covered.
