Sea Dogs slated to get slugger for three games during his rehab assignment

Craig Cooper has held season tickets to the Portland Sea Dogs for nearly 10 years, and generally gives them to clients, business associates or friends.

Fortunately for Cooper, he didn't give away his tickets for next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

That's when Red Sox slugger David "Big Papi" Ortiz is scheduled to play with the Dogs at Portland's Hadlock Field.

Ortiz has been out of the Red Sox lineup since May with a wrist injury. His visit to Double-A Portland -- along with one to Triple-A Pawtucket -- is designed to give him a chance to get his famous swing in shape before rejoining his major league teammates at Fenway Park.

The chance to see a top player in an intimate setting -- especially a player such as Ortiz, who has a knack for knocking balls way out of parks --is lighting up Internet auction sites and has baseball fans clamoring for tickets to the sold-out games.

"I quickly went to my tickets and took those three games out just to make sure I don't accidentally give them to anyone else," said Cooper, owner of Rainbow Construction in Cape Elizabeth.

Cooper's box seats are located seven rows off the field behind the Sea Dogs dugout on the first-base line. He's looking forward to seeing Ortiz, who is known for his clutch hitting and larger-than-life personality.

"I'm just thinking how small Hadlock is going to look to him," Cooper said.

The Sea Dogs sold a one-day record of 7,000 tickets online Sunday for the three games that Ortiz is scheduled to play in.

There were about 500 tickets left Monday morning, and they went in 20 minutes to the throng of people lined up outside Hadlock, hundreds of whom went home empty-handed, said Chris Cameron, Sea Dogs spokesman.
