AUGUSTA: School board to hear words about Daniel Cony

AUGUSTA -- The Board of Education meets tonight to consider the wording that would accompany a bronze statue of Daniel Cony being donated to Cony High School.
Funds to purchase the bronze statue of the school's namesake are being donated by Robert G. Fuller Jr., of Winthrop.
Fuller anticipates the bronze, life-size statue of Daniel Cony will be placed in the foyer of Cony High School.
Wednesday, at its 7 p.m. public meeting, the Augusta Board of Education is scheduled to consider a draft of the wording that Fuller said he conceives as being mounted adjacent to the statue.
The proposed wording states: "Daniel Cony 1752-1842. Officer in the Revolutionary Army, physician, lawyer, Representative and Senator from the District of Maine to the Massachusetts General Court and member of its Executive Council, member of the Electoral College, delegate to Maine's Constitutional Convention following the Act of Separation whereby Maine became a state, a founder of Bowdoin College, and served as Judge of the Court of Common Pleas and Judge of Probate for Kennebec County. In 1815, he founded and endowed Cony Female Academy, now Cony High School. 'He promoted the cause of public education in our common schools by the exercise of a constant and healthful influence in its favor.' - J.W. North, History of Augusta."
Fuller -- who, according to court documents is a descendant of Daniel Cony -- said the statue would be done by Forest Hart, the same artist who did the large bronze Cony Ram statue that now sits in front of the high school.
It would depict Daniel Cony leaning slightly forward, with his right hand extended as though to greet students entering the school, Fuller said.
