SOUTH PORTLAND — High school bands from South Portland, Old Orchard Beach and three New Hampshire communities captured top awards Saturday in the Maine Band Directors Association finals competition.
South Portland High School received the top recognition possible in all six judging categories – drum major, visual effects, percussion, color guard, music and general effects – said Michael Fletcher, a band booster who helped with the competition, held at South Portland High School.
"That's pretty unusual for that to happen," Fletcher said.
Gold medals were awarded to Salem, Dover and Portsmouth, N.H., high schools, in addition to Old Orchard Beach and South Portland, Fletcher said.
Biddeford, Marshwood, Leavitt, Westbrook and Edward Little high schools won silver medals, and bronze awards went to Wells, Lawrence and Sanford high schools, he said.
The winning bands were selected by eight judges, four of whom pay attention to the musical aspect of the performance and four who focus on visual presentations.
"I look at the costumes, the themes, the designs and how it all matches up," said Anne Keegan of Walpole, Mass., one of the visual judges at Saturday's competition.
Other judges pay attention to other parts of the visual presentation and one looks at the overall visual performance, just as some musical judges are assigned to grade particular aspects of the musical performance – percussion, for example – and another rates the bands as ensembles.
Judges use a scale of one to four to rate the bands and have years of personal experience, as well as a year of training, to draw on, said Jeff Stewart of Providence, R.I., another of Saturday's visual judges.
Stewart said all the judges he's met played with their high school and usually college marching bands.
