BANGOR, Maine - One of the first things Timothy McCluskey noticed when he became principal at Vine Street School last year was that the school lacked a flagpole.
That, however, has changed, thanks to some help from Boy Scout Austin Smith, an eighth-grader at the adjacent James F. Doughty School who took the project on as a community service project required to become an Eagle Scout.
The shiny new flagpole, which stands tall near Vine Street School’s main entrance, was the focus of a dedication ceremony Tuesday that involved the school’s more than 260 pre-kindergarten through grade three students — including Smith’s younger brother Kobe.
The ceremony, which included reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and singing "You’re a Grand Old Flag," not only coincided with Election Day, it also served as a lead-in to Flag Day, which this year falls on Saturday.
Among the special guests on hand were the Boy Scout’s parents, Jay and Tammy Smith, retiring Superintendent Robert "Sandy" Ervin, his successor, Betsy Webb, several staff members and the Bangor High School Junior ROTC color guard.
Gov. John Baldacci, a Bangor native, stopped by to offer his congratulations, calling Smith’s community service project "a wonderful example of youth leadership," adding that once Smith becomes an Eagle Scout, he will join an elite group. Less than 1 percent of Scouts attain Eagle Scout status, he noted.
"I know you’re doing what you’re doing because you love doing it," the governor said.
Besides the installation of the pole itself, Smith’s Eagle Scout project involved building the short concrete walkway leading up to it as well as the landscaping and perennial plantings that flank the walkway.
Smith also arranged for the two flags he and Baldacci raised during the ceremony to be donated to the school.
