Sisters join survivor in 3-day breast cancer walk

Dover-Foxcroft: Sisters join survivor in 3-day breast cancer walk

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine - Over the years, Debbie Dyer, 55, of Dover-Foxcroft, always found it heart-wrenching to read about people with breast cancer. When her younger sister Judy Dow, 53, of Yarmouth was diagnosed a few years ago, it hit home hard.
It’s not easy watching a family member go through the trials of the disease, according to Dyer. With her sister’s cancer now in remission, Dyer, along with other family members and friends, will join Dow in participating in the Breast Cancer 3-Day walk benefiting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation next month in Boston.
"We had talked about doing it last year but [Dow] was still kind of gaining her strength back so we thought we would do it this year," Dyer said. The 60-mile fundraising walk is paced at 20 miles a day on Aug. 15, 16 and 17.
Dyer said she and Dow would be joined by their sister, Shirley Manzo, 51, of Skowhegan, Dyer’s daughter Dennett Clarke of Ellsworth, Dennett’s friend Amanda Ashe of Ellsworth and Stephanie Bridges of Corinna. Bridges, who didn’t want to travel to Boston alone, contacted Dyer and asked to join her group. Their team name is Poli Hoaloha, which means bosom buddies in Hawaiian.
To participate, Dyer said each walker must raise $2,200 for breast cancer research, a task that first appeared daunting. She said she has raised about half of the funds and is getting quite a boost from her community.
"Everybody’s been very supportive," she said. Two local businesses have planned fundraising events and a local club has volunteered to help, she said.
John Turke, owner of The Pub, will donate to Dyer 10 percent of his entire take from opening to closing on July 12. He also said he would be taking collections for her effort.
