Barbara Keef is an information junkie.
A technology/reference librarian at the Windham Public Library, Keef was recently recognized as Outstanding Librarian of the Year during the Maine Library Association's Summit. Keef said Monday she was honored and surprised by the recognition.
"I was surprised. There were all kinds of people that deserve it," Keef said, reflecting on her love for her job. "I have always loved information -- finding facts, figures and trivia. It's really fun to connect the information for people looking for it."
Keef joined the library as an administrative assistant in 1995. A few years ago, she completed her master's degree in library and information science through a distance education program at the University of South Carolina.
"I needed to do something to support my family. It was interesting to me. I grew up with books and love English. It was comforting and familiar," Keef said.
She has a variety of roles such as maintaining the public access computers and showing people how to use them. Keef said she enjoys showing patrons how to surf the internet and set up an email account.
"To be able to help people get pictures of their children and grandchildren is really cool," she said.
