BANGOR, Maine - Just when he had gotten the ball rolling - make that dropping - in his effort to give Times Square some competition as the hot spot to spend New Year’s Eve, local lawyer Stephen C. Smith shipped out for a yearlong stint in Afghanistan.
Smith, 38, a former Marine and captain in the Maine Army National Guard, left Bangor a few days after he rang in 2006. He spent three months training in Indiana before deploying for the war-torn nation in March 2006 as a lawyer with the Judge Advocate General’s Corps.
He returned last year on leave for Christmas and to usher in 2007 by tossing the ball off the roof of his brick building at 26 Main St., where he lives with his wife and children. Smith then headed back to Afghanistan to complete his tour. He returned home for good on March 31.
While he was overseas, the low-key event he started on a whim four years ago morphed into Downtown Countdown, sponsored by the city of Bangor with activities from 4 p.m. to midnight today at more than a dozen venues, not including downtown bars and restaurants.
