Patricia Valeriani did not take a gun with her Monday when she went to retrieve belongings from her former home in Naples, where she shot her husband.
"There's no indication" of that, said state police Lt. Brian McDonough, head of detectives for southern Maine.
Misty Emmert, one of the Valerianis' daughters, said a gun was kept in the house.
McDonough said police are still investigating the death of Anthony Valeriani Jr., 52, and it could be several weeks before the Attorney General's Office decides whether to charge Patricia Valeriani.
Police have not detailed what happened, but they did not arrest Valeriani and said the shooting might be a case of justifiable homicide, meaning she acted to protect herself or someone else.
Patricia Valeriani, 46, was back at her grandmother's house in Yarmouth on Wednesday after being treated for injuries suffered in the encounter with her husband.
Patricia Valeriani, who filed for divorce last month, moved out of the couple's house off Songo School Road in Naples last summer and has been staying with her grandmother to care for the older woman, police said.
After visiting with her children and grandchildren on Monday, Valeriani went to the house where the couple raised their children to gather some belongings.
Police were alerted to the afternoon shooting when she flagged down a passing motorist, who notified the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.
Valeriani was taken into custody and interviewed. She told officers that she had shot her husband of 29 years, according to law enforcement.
A man answering the telephone Wednesday at the Valeriani home said that neither Patricia Valeriani nor her family members want to speak about the incident.
