SANFORD — Citing widespread opposition to a methadone clinic proposed in downtown Sanford, the Town Council unanimously passed an emergency moratorium Tuesday night.
The 90-day moratorium, which prevents the opening of any methadone clinic in town, can be renewed while town officials write an ordinance to address methadone clinics, said Town Manager Mark Green. He estimated it will take six months to write and adopt an ordinance.
"I am one councilor who is 100 percent opposed to any methadone clinic anywhere in Sanford," said Councilor Gordon Paul. "It brings a lot of hidden problems (and) those problems are not easily solved."
Representatives from the Florida-based Colonial Management Group met with town officials Friday to discuss opening a clinic in the Midtown Mall, which is expected to be a key element of a proposed downtown renovation.
Colonial Management operates methadone clinics in 18 states, including the Penobscot County Metro Treatment Center in Bangor.
Maine has eight methadone clinics in operation.
