Harpswell to seek input on wind farm potential
Voters may be asked to commission a study at the March 2008 town meeting.

The town of Harpswell is looking at the possibility of allowing wind generators on Long Reach Mountain, after a resident suggested that the town might want to seek a development partner to construct a wind farm.

Town officials recently contacted a Massachusetts research lab about doing a wind study, though the approval of residents at a town meeting would be needed before the municipality could commission a study.

"I think the town needs to be open to the possibility, but we also need to have a public discussion before it can go any further," said Town Administrator Kristi K. Eiane.

In April, Harpswell's Board of Selectmen received a request from Richard Newman, a resident, for permission to investigate whether a wind farm might have potential at town-owned Long Reach Mountain, which is 200 feet high. Selectmen approved the request.

In October, Newman completed his assessment and recommended that the town consider seeking voter approval for a wind study at its March 2008 town meeting. The town would have to seek a development partner if a wind farm project is found to be practical.

Newman said residents would have ample opportunity before the vote to discuss some of the issues -- such as possible harm to birds and bats -- that have cropped up at other wind farm projects in Maine.
