Chris Emmet remembers what it was like to be provided a sanctuary and some guidance during a troubled time in his youth. He could have put those days behind him as he climbed the ladder of success -- Bowdoin graduate, Ivy League MBA, Wall Street investor.
Instead he periodically climbs into his car and drives 360 miles from his home in New Jersey back to Maine to help the organization that helped him.
"I'm paying back and I enjoy doing it. It's really important to me and I'm going to try to make a difference there," Emmet said after completing one of his trips to Maine.
Emmet was elected to the board of directors of Saco-based Sweetser last month after being a behind-the-scenes benefactor for years.
Sweetser provides services for about 20,000 children and adults from Kittery to Belfast who are experiencing a mental illness, behavioral disorder or substance abuse problem
