MILLINOCKET, Maine - For just a few minutes, Morgan Van Dine was a head above everybody else.
An inflatable plastic tube that kids crawl around in — like a big hollow sausage laid out by an engineer — the Wind Castle had a slot on the top that occupants could stick their heads through and look out at the world. Ten-year-old Morgan was among those kids at Jerry Pond on Saturday.
"This is cool," she said. "I have been in everything else so far, but this is the best."
Morgan was among about 350 children and 260 adults who participated in the 10th annual Kids Day at Jerry Pond. Sponsored by volunteers from the local Elks Club, VFW, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, VFW Men’s Auxiliary, American Legion Riders, Sons of the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary, Kids Day gave participants a chance to enjoy the pond and several rides and events.
Everything was free, said Rick Cyr, chairman of the Kids Day Committee and event founder.
"It’s just one day for the kids," Cyr said Saturday, "the premise being that for one day, everybody in town can come together and enjoy themselves.
"This is probably our best one so far," Cyr added. "The last one that was this well-attended was during the [Millinocket] Centennial in 2002. Probably that’s because of the price of gas. Nobody’s going on vacations anymore, but they can afford to come here and enjoy it."
It was a good weekend all around for families in Millinocket. The Knights of Columbus also held its third annual chicken barbecue yard sale at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 27 Highland Ave., on Sunday. That event ran from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Face painting, a clown, dunking booth, bounce house, pitching games, a bicycle raffle and booths featuring several civic and health organizations were among the offerings at Kids Day.
