SKOWHEGAN -- Police said they did not know the identity Saturday of a 14-year-old Skowhegan girl who was hit by a car Friday night on school grounds after a football game.
Deputy Chief Rick Bonneau said the girl, who lives on Summer Street, was airlifted from Redington-Fairview General Hospital to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. An EMMC spokesman told Officer Herb Oliver early Saturday morning that the girl's injuries were not life-threatening, Bonneau said.
Bonneau said the girl was walking with friends after Skowhegan Area High School's homecoming football game against Bangor. When she crossed the road that leads to the school, a 2000 Buick Century driven by Joseph LaBrie Jr. of Norridgewock hit her, Bonneau said.
"She was wearing dark clothing, and the street light was out where she crossed," Bonneau said. "Neither speed nor alcohol were factors."
Bonneau said the girl crossed the access road between cars, but her friends did not follow her. LaBrie was driving toward the school to pick up his children, Bonneau said.
"He had no time to respond," Bonneau said. "It was an unfortunate incident, with the dark clothing and no lighting." The access road speed limit is 15 mph.
