OAKLAND -- An Oakland man is facing domestic-assault charges after he allegedly assaulted a former girlfriend at Messalonskee High School on Tuesday morning.
William Bean, 18, was arrested Tuesday afternoon after he turned himself in.
School Resource Officer Tracey Frost said Bean, who is not a student at Messalonskee, had recently broken up with a 17-year-old student at the school and had called and arranged to meet her between classes Tuesday morning.
When they met, Bean allegedly assaulted the girl, but the altercation ended quickly when a guidance counselor in a nearby office noticed the two and stood up to intervene.
Frost said when Bean saw the guidance counselor, he quickly left the building and got into a car that was driven by a friend.
After Bean left, Oakland patrol officers searched the area for the car and State Police and Waterville Police also looked for Bean in several locations, but were unable to find him.
Frost said that friends of Bean eventually reached him via cell phone and convinced him to turn himself in.
The girl was not hurt in the altercation, which was apparently over property, said Frost.
Police took the incident very seriously, said Frost, and not just because it took place at a high school.
